Tornadic supercell over goldenrod, Crawford, Nebraska

Putting stills into motion. This is a stitched photo from a batch of 300-plus images used to create just one shot for the world's first 16K video, "Prairie Wind." Notes: I stood on a hill covered with goldenrod, the state flower of Nebraska, as this tornado-warned storm approached. I departed just as it arrived.

Three Clear Nights

The stars appear to revolve around the northern polar axis during three successive clear nights. By driving an iron bar into the ground, bolting a ball-head to it, and securely anchoring my camera, I was able to leave it in place while capturing more than 3000 40-second images over three nights. I was able to change the extended-life battery, wrap the lens in hand warmers, and bundle the camera in a down coat each night without changing the focal point.
