Feldspar Twins

By Bernardo Cesare FRPS

Polarized light photomicrograph of a thin section of an igneous rock called diorite, formed approximately 35 million years ago and showing a twinned feldspar. Twinning is the coexistence of several portions of a crystal with two distinct optical orientations. Under the microscope this is observed by the presence of bands of alternating colors, often delimited by straight boundaries. Width of view 3.0 mm
